P2 Context

There have been enormous advancements in computer technology in the past few decades. Going from enormous to micro, sluggish to high speed, repulsive to elegant and unknown to worldwide. Computers and the cyber world has become a part of our culture, livelihood, and existence. Thus our group decided to investigate the space in the cyber world in comparison the real worlds physical space.

For our podcast we decided to choose three popular online activities and compare them to their non-online counter parts. The three online activities we picked were researching, gambling, and shopping.

We first depicted those activities without the Internet. Each of those activities was done in the physical world. The people involved in these activities had to be in separate places to do them because of accessibility reasons. For researching in the real world, our subject needed to be in the physical library to achieve his research. For gambling, two friends needed tojavascript:void(0) meet at a physical location to gamble. For shopping, our subject needed to actually go to the store to pick her items. We notice that as they are doing it, all of the subjects were situated in different places.

Then we showed our subjects doing the exact activities using their laptops and the Internet. Though they are all doing separate activities that require them to be at different cyber places, they are still situated in the same physical room in real life. By having all the subjects actually being in the same exact room while doing all those activities that otherwise would of required them to be at different locations, we see the large impact of how computers have impacted our lives. Space in the cyber world has brought us closer together in the end and we don’t need to go out of our way in our busy lives to achieve certain activities.

Week 6: Proposal

Part 1:
The web-space is a dimension that gives people the ability to traverse from place to place but without having to traverse any physical distance. We want to closely investigate the perceived efficiency of traversing different places in cyberspace and how this compares to traversing in the physical world.

Part 2:
The pod cast will investigate the online cyber world. Often we feel as if we’re in an actual physical space while surfing online. However we’re still in the physical presence of our home using a computer. For instance a person shopping online can feel as if the person is shopping at a physical store, playing a massive online video game may entitle the person to believe he or she is in a physical fantasy world. Video conferencing may create a very similar atmosphere to an actual face to face conference in a physical conference room.

In our pod cast video, we will focus on the physical experience on online shopping and how it transforms our shopping culture. We would like to question on the several aspects or advantages of online shopping, such as time saving, and to investigate how well we spend our "saved" time on other activities and how our online shopping orders AFFECT our shopping experience as compared to the physical shopping. We might conduct street interviews or survey on how people's satisfactory level of receiving the goods is affected depends on the waiting time.

Part3:
We will use many different research techniques to help support, enhance, and elaborate on our idea. We will include field research such as surveys, questionnaires, and naturalistic observations. This will help us get a large sample of data that we can compile and examine.

We will also use some text books to help support our information such as the text book “Small Pieces Loosely Joined”. This text book offers us insight on how the web influences our perception of time and space. It looks directly at our topic of why we perceive the Web as space and how distance is eliminated by it. It also offers a lot of other interesting information that we may incorporate into our project such as the Web giving us a sense of realism and togetherness.

Other information sources that we may use are articles found on the Internet, newspaper articles and notes from courses that are relevant to our topic. For CCT260, we dealt with similar topics regarding how the Web makes the globe smaller because it helps eliminate distance. An example brought up in a lecture slide was Online Learning, which offers virtual classrooms that help students that live in rural areas be able to attend school without having to travel long distances.

For references, we will use movies such as “Click”, and all our gathered resources from our research. We will try to draw from as much sources as possible to help guide and support our topic and podcast.

Part4:
We would like to make our podcast very precise and informative for our viewers. We would like to make this a short documentary of some sort. Since we are going to conduct surveys by using questionnaires, we feel that it will be important to conduct a few interviews and make this a part of our podcast as well. We will also have a head style segment where the presenter can talk about facts. Narration will be a crucial part of our podcast since a great deal of information will be passed onto the viewer making the podcast informative, enlightening and persuasive.

The podcast will consist of four main parts, each roughly equally in length. In the first part we will propose our question to the viewing audience. For example, Are virtual spaces a good substitute for the experience that physical spaces provide? In the second part we will showcase our process of surveys and interviews. Here we will focus on what questions we asked and why we asked them. The third part will include some interviews and narration. In the fourth and final part we will discuss our findings and the answers to the questions we initially proposed.

Week 5: My Team

Team Awesome

Initial Concept:

Technology Influences
We love shopping, as there are more reliable online shopping places on the Internet, we tend to shift our shopping spaces from physical to virtual. Our team would like to investigate on the impacts and consequences on online shopping as we will discuss it further in our proposal.

Week 4: What makes a good video podcast? A Review of My Favorite Podcast video .....

http://current.com/people/oslostil
"Weekday Norway Runway"
by http://www.oslostil.com/

The video is filmed by the "Oslostil Team", a group of Norwegian photographers who love fashion. They believe that it is possible to find inspiration on stylish fashion from ordinary people on the street, and it is just as good as to read a fashion magazine. They take pictures of ordinary people on the street and post it on their website. This video is their first attempt to transform their work into a podcast and is picked by Current TV as one their TV programmes.

When I play the video, I am immediately attracted by its background music, it is energetic, and is best match the theme of stylish fashion. At the beginning of the video, we can see the street sides of Oslo, one of the biggest cities in Norway. Then the host appears in the video, in a style that looks like he is holding the camera by himself because we can only see his head and is a bit shaky. He announces the main idea of this video - to find stylish people on the streets of Oslo and to share their fashion tips. This filming style can always be found in documentary video that only one person in charge of the whole filming process, that is to be the cameraman as well as the host. This kind of documentary style gives the audiences an honest and comfort feeling and enhances the level of audience involvement. In the rest of the video, we can only see the interviewees on the screen and hear the voice of the host in the background. Besides, I also like the filming angles of the video. The host tries to film the interviewees in different angles, zoom in and out, move from top to bottom randomly, and this way enhances the stylish feeling as well. The editing is good too, every move of the interviewees seems to match with the rhythm of the background music, makes their moves and the constantly changing filming angles seems smooth and natural.

I enjoy watching this video and to see how people and places are like in the European countries.

Week 3: Web 2.0 and Podcasting - where is this heading?

Web 2.0 enables web users to become part of the "Web", that is, it enables everyone to contribute, publish, create, and manage the global area of the Web. Web users can interact with each other, share and build the Web together. For instance, Web forum is a user-oriented web space that users are responsible for the contribution of the contents and forum owners only responsible for the technical backend coding part as well as to maintain the contents flow. The topics of Web forum are vary, from sports, entertainment news, household issues, gardening to any topics that you can think of and of interest to discuss with others.

RealGM.com is one of the popular sport forums on the Web, it provides NBA news, scores, polls to users, as well as a discussion board for users to share their opinions on NBA. It not only provides a social place for NBA lovers to talk with each other virtually on the Web, but also provides opportunities for these Web users to unite as a group to watch real time NBA games together.

As Web 2.0 becoming the trend, users start to concern about the security and privacy problems since Web contents are generated among Web users, the credibility of the contents itself become a question and everyone can say anything, can edit other’s says on the Web, and it is becoming harder to define whether certain contents can or cannot be trusted. For instance, Youtube, the most popular Podcasting website on the Web are facing a problem of verifying the credibility of the contents on the site. There were users Podcasting something like personal video diary on Youtube, and the series of video generate a large number of viewers, but at the end, the video provider reveals the truth that the contents of the videos are fake, she is an actor and trying to act out someone’s life on the Podcast, and the act disappointed thousands of her loyal viewers.

We should pay attention when watching podcast videos or interacting with strangers on the Internet, and should learn how to analyze what we see and to determine if it is trustworthy. Also,we should beware of what we say and not giving important information to anyone who we do not know on the Internet.

Week 2: Seeking a best of…

Snippets of Life - http://www.karencheng.com.au/

If you love art and design, love fashion, love to eat healthy, love your kids, family and friends, then you will definitely love to read Karen Cheng's blog.

Being a designer, writer, artist and mother of two, Karen Cheng shares her daily life events, art design ideas, fashion senses, even parenting tips with all of her blog readers. I become one of her loyal readers since I discovered her blog.

The blog has a neat and simple layout, simple but not bored. White background color with classic black text makes her colorful banner picture (probably designed by her) ever more attractive and colorful. I like the way how she divided the layout, blog entries on the left, navigation menu in the center (slightly to the right), sponsors or advertisment (that relate to her topics) on the right. It is "reader-friendly", there are links on the top part of her blog that makes readers easier to browse within her site, or contact her.

I especially like the way she put RSS, StumbleUpon, Facebook links below the advertisments - that provides a easier way for readers to subscribe to her blog's RSS, or, add her to your facebook and become one of her friends!

Week 1: What is the biggest issue facing blogging, citizenship and the future of media?

Topics of blogs are varied, ranging from personal diary (text, photo, video), educational blog, informative blog, news blog, even promotional blog, etc. In order to find out more about blog, I try to search for the keyword: “Blog” on Google.com. The result surprises me that there are not only personal blogs but also corporation blogs in the first 30 resutls. Corporation blogs such as Google Blog, Facebook Blog, Flickr Blog are used to provide information, product news and are aimmed to communicate with their users. In my experience of leaving comments on other people’s blogs, or look for comments on my blog, I find it annoying that there are many times that I need to go back to the blog that I have left comment on to check if the writer has replied me or not. Sometimes I find the reply that is dedicated for my comment, but it might be posted after several other people’s comments on the same blog entry. What I am trying to say is, will there be a more convenient way to communicate between blog writers and readers? Therefore, I think the biggest issue facing blogging would be its inadequate interactivity.

In terms of citizenship, when you sign up and create a blog on a particular webblog provider website, you are indeed joining this “virtual community” and become a “virtual citizen” on this community. Once you have created your blog, your blog will be registered on the user list of this website. Users on the website can search for your blog by keywords. Since there is no identity certification needed to create a blog, one can create as many blog as he or she can, and act totally different in each blog, and, to have “multi-citizenships” on this community. This cannot be happened in real life but can happen anywhere on the virtual communities. Therefore, this might be a problem in the future that provides a platform for the Internet crimes.
